How many years experience in the industry?
10 +
How did you get your start in the Fashion Design and/or retail industry? When was this? Did you have any formal training?
First trip to India at 18, bought exotic finds and gems to sell back home in Honolulu… continued on to art and design training that took me from Paris, to Bali, to Shanghai and back home!
How did you manage to launch your own fashion line?
After years of searching out treasures around the world, we wanted to return home to participate in the design movement, “local / handmade /eco-friendly”.
What is your philosophy of design?
Everything we make is meant to be a treasure to be kept as a memory of this time and place.
Where do you draw your style inspiration from? Who is your favorite style icon?
The wonderful online outlets for creativity…. Etsy, Pinterest, Wanelo… its like watching a million fireflies all glow and breathe in sync… The internet is allowing us to reach the 100th monkey effect quicker than ever before… this is especially useful and wonderful for us little Hawaii kids… lost in the middle of the ocean but still tuned into the big city buzz.
What are the current trends in your industry?
This is a time for variety, lots of popularity at once… wear that etherial flowing robe with the crazy geometric shorts and the hardcore boots, dont forget the multicolored earring and the bohemian bone necklace. Mix and play… express yourself… be your treasure trove.
What are your top 5 hot trends for the upcoming Summer and Fall seasons?
WHITE, Crocheted, See through, COLORFUL RAINBOW everything… jewelry wise…lots of lines as in geometric, hard slices, substantial pieces, gemstones and crystals, bone and animals.
What is your signature style?
Everything we are making right now ties back into the islands… a statement of this place.
Tell me about your collection. What makes your line (and/or retail store) stand out from the crowd?
We try not to take ourselves too seriously. Our collections are meant to be fun… something to talk about.
What is your favorite piece from your collection?
The multicolored leather geometric MAUI stud earrings, it feels like combining two worlds… how silly with color can we be… and oh yes, why it is in the shape of my favorite little island.
Please tell me about the textiles you use in your designs. Any specific fabrics and colors that you love to work with?
We try to cover the gamut: we have casted 3D prints into metals, lasercut koa cut outs, beaded and stitched pendants, cut leather jewels… arriving soon are gorgeous porcelain pieces and super silly neon acrylic.
What clothing/accessory lines do you carry in your store?
We are available at Wings Hawaii… more stores soon. Items can be purchased online… but I’m way happier to have the people head to Wings. 🙂 Or on the west side at Leru Atelier. 🙂
If we took a peek in your closet, what would we see? What is your ‘can’t live without’ item?
Oooh great question! As a nomad, everything in my closet still fits in a suitcase… so allIi have are vintage lingerie, old hawaii prints, native american leather, and my everyday sundresses, tanks and shorts…. not to mention a whole shelf of boots!
What is the staple clothing item or accessory every woman on Maui be sure to have?
Lightweight low rise boots and a statement necklace. We change climates so much up here! Beach to the volcano all in one day… boots let you rockout in any environment… the necklace keeps you dressed even when its just time for a bikini.
