Let’s be honest.
Government, at all levels in American society, is getting smaller. Call them what you will–government programs, bureaucracies, whatever–are doing less and less each year, especially for the poorest members of society. We still have to pay taxes, but many of the health, education and welfare services we’ve come to expect from public agencies
are simply no more.
Non-profit organizations are trying to pick up the slack, but they need your help. They need money, of course, and volunteer labor, but often they might just need some of your old stuff (as long as it’s in good, workable condition). So please look over the following wish lists from many of our island’s non-profits and charities, and find the best way you can help.
Times are tough all around, and the only way things will get better is if we all help each other.

FRIENDS OF HANA KEIKI
WHAT THEY DO:
Work to overcome the many challenges the Hana School and community face in providing services to area children. The organization works with Hana School and other community organizations to identify needs of area children and develop, fund and promote programs which are not provided through traditional school and community funding sources.
The State of Hawaii gives money to schools based on the number of enrolled students. Hana’s small enrollment doesn’t generate enough funds to provide everything Hana School needs. Most schools in Hana’s situation would be consolidated to make ends meet, but wrapping Hana School into another public school is not possible because of its isolation. The Friends of Hana Keiki’s goal is to fill in the gaps and fund desperately needed service for area children.
WHAT THEY NEED:
Cash donations ($30 provides one book a month to a child for a year as part of the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which mails a free, brand new, age appropriate book each month to any registered child under the age of five in our community from Keanae to Kaupo)
Gardening supplies (leaf rakes, pick axes, bags of soil, seeds) for the Keiki Garden, which teaches elementary age children about farming, growing sustainable crops, feeding your family healthy foods, and about agriculture as a career
School supplies (copy paper, pens, pencils, composition books, lined paper, dry erase markers) for the School Supply Fund, which provides needed supplies to students and teachers
