LUNCH
Cafe Mambo
It seems like eclecticism is the way to go if you’re shooting for Best of honors. Mambo is a case-in-point—the menu goes well beyond sandwiches and burgers. Yes, vegans like myself will dig the tofu-nori fajitas, the seven-vegetable tagine (morroccan stew) and the roasted vegetable salad. Carnivores can sink their teeth into steak and blue cheese, kalua duck fajitas and Tia Concha chicken tagine, to name a few. The atmosphere is decidedly sunny, a quality enhanced by the colorful artwork on the walls. Plus, any place that screens films like The Big Lebowski and Pan’s Labyrinth and has Maui Brewing Company beers on tap is worth checking out. 30 Baldwin Ave., Paia, 808-579-8021. [KB]
Runner up: Cafe O’Lei, Kihei & Wailuku
