BEST PLATE LUNCH
Aloha Mixed Plate
There’s something about a plate lunch that is quintessentially Hawaiian. Maybe it’s the harmonic blend of different cultures that creates a unique, island flavor. Maybe it’s the sweet way in which mac salad and sticky white rice easily complement all sorts of meats—fried chicken, barbecued chicken, gravy-drowning hamburger, chili dogs, etc. More likely, it’s that plate lunches are also steaming, hot evidence that our taste buds are eternally locked in a vicious, no-holds-barred war against our arteries. Hey, if you don’t eat stuff like this then all those doctors who perform angioplasty, rotational atherectomy and liposuction will go out of business. Do you want that? We didn’t think so. 1285 Front St., Lahaina, 661-3322.
Runner-up: Da Kitchen. 425 Koloa St., Kahului, 871-7782; 2439 S. Kihei Rd., 875-7782. (YT)
