BEST FARMERS’ MARKET
Maui Swap Meet
This whole country would be much healthier if everyone bought their food at farmers’ markets. It’s so much fun to search through papayas and mangos, and it’s cheaper than the supermarket or health food store. It’s also a good way to mix with the neighbors. At the Swap Meet, I met a cute Filipino woman who sells great green papayas for my Som Tam, delicious squash and even chayote, my favorite tropical vegetable. Local farmers sell many types of Choys—the Asian green leafy vegetable used in stir-fries—long beans, avocados and limes. This is the place to go to get the best prices on the exotic or the mundane fruits and veggies. Saturdays, 7 a.m. to noon, on Puunene Ave. in Kahului, 877-3100. [JG]
