72 BEST PLACE TO CURE THAT MYSTERIOUS RASH
tie: dragon,s den/long,s drugs
Believe me, I know well the vagaries of mysterious rashes. Okay, that sounds really bad. What I mean is, I recently had a strange outbreak of red, itchy bumps on my arms. I didn’t know where they came from and I didn’t care—I just wanted them gone. And so did my frightened co-workers. I immediately tried a cortisone cream, much like what you’d find at Long’s. That worked on the first batch of rash sightings, but then other splotches showed up. So then I went to see an herbalist, much like who you’d find at Dragon’s Den. The herbalist provided more personal care, in an attempt to treat whatever imbalances I had internally to cause toxins to come out through my skin. Now I’m rash-free but I’m sure you’ll agree—a combo of Eastern and Western medicine is generally the best route to take. Dragon’s Den. 3681 Baldwin Ave., Makawao, 572-2424/Long’s. Located island-wide.
runner-up: kaiser. located island-wide. (sc)
73 BEST MANICURE
mimi evangelista @ rutz
I’ve always had working girl hands. No, not that working girl—the kind that have chipped nails that’re unmanicured, dry and cracked at the fingertips. A trip to see Mimi at Rutz cured all of that. The best part? She specializes in natural nails so she was happy to work with what God gave me. I left relaxed and charmed with perfectly shaped and colored fingernails. 1847 S. Kihei Rd., 891-1444.

74 BEST PLACE TO BUY PORN
With over 2,500 DVD and 300 VHS titles to choose from, Paradise Spice deservedly racked up the most votes from porn aficionados island-wide. Affable Charlie Harder, owner of Paradise Spice, has done a good job creating a clean, well-lit space for men, women and couples to peruse the many aisles of the latest in adult film entertainment. He keeps up to date on AVN news and even runs a local online broadcast of innuendo-laden hip-hop and rock on kpsx.com, which you will hear throughout the store. Aside from the “four four-hour videos for $8.95 each” special, most DVDs run about $39.95, with specialty “alternative” DVDs hitting up to $89.95. His most popular DVD in store? Lying in one of the waxing rooms, staring at the ceiling decorated with clouds, flower stencils and soft colors, you can’t help but feel at ease listening to soothing music. 78 BEST BOOKSTORE
Okay, so you love Borders. And with 20,000 square feet of books, music, videos and yoga mats, it’s easy to see why. Of course, there are other bookstores on island with that quaint, intellectual and, well, more bookish appeal, but Borders has size and selection on its side. The Maui mothership for all Borders outlets is in Kahului with over 200,000 book titles, 1,500 magazine titles, newspapers and buckets of DVDs. And the general manager, William Nakamura, who has been with the store almost since it opened eight years ago, has succeeded valiantly in trying to incorporate community events, live local music and book signings on a weekly basis. So, you know, even for a corporate bookstore, that’s pretty cool stuff. 270 Dairy Rd., Kahului, 877-6160.

I’ve spent a lot of time in Borders with only $20, so here’s what I do. First I search the shelves, looking for a couple books that seem good. Then I head to the cafe and order some coffee and a muffin. I also grab a stack of magazines that I would never buy but like to look through. But David’s doesn’t just specialize in pedicures. If you want to pamper the rest of your body as well, they offer manicures, haircuts, styles and perms. Do people still get perms? (Tie) maui sporting goods/pappy , s fishing and hobby
The minute you step into a tackle shop and start looking around at the things fishermen use to catch fish, the more you realize it’s a bit of an art as well as a sport. There’s the technical side of poles, reels, lines and hooks. The question of what kind of bait to use. Then there are the knots, weights, and hooks meant to entice those fish. Well, if it’s fish you want to catch then a stop to Pappy’s or Maui Sporting Goods is in order. If you’re not so lucky then just stop at the fish market when your boat docks. 95 BEST LAUNDROMAT
lipoa laundry center
This is, by far, the greatest Laundromat on the island of Maui—perhaps in the entire Hawaiian archipelago. Sure, it’s like most Laundromats, with acres of washers ($3 a wash for the smaller models, $6 for the industrial-sized machines), driers and nice big tables for folding clothes, but how many Laundromats do you know of that have video games? Hmmm? This one does. And a wall covered in vintage washboards, to give the place a nostalgic feel. Now it’s not an all-night laundry, catering to people who just have to wash their dainty unmentionables at 3 a.m., but it does have a really nice attendant on hand to answer any laundry-related questions you might have. 41 E. Lipoa, Kihei, 875-9266.

96 BEST PLACE TO BUY A USED CAR
You know, when we first envisioned this category, we kinda thought that you, our loyal readers, would vote for oh, I don’t know, a place. A place where people could go to buy a used car. A dealership, a lot, something like that. And that’s pretty much why we titled this item “Best place to buy a used car.” Now we have nothing against The Maui Bulletin , but really, it’s not a place. It’s a shopper. It’s filled with used car ads, sure, but it ain’t a place.
runner-up: valley isle motors. 221 s. pu,unene ave., kahului, 877-3673. (ap)
97 BEST SECONDHAND STORE
The garment industry’s dirty little secret is that most of your clothes come from sweatshops all over the world. If you knew of the conditions that these laborers worked under to make your duds, you would get naked immediately. Making matters worse is that the chemical processing of fabrics, like cotton, is polluting the world. What can you do? Buy hemp clothes or handmade garments for starters, and never buy ready-to-wear unless it’s been recycled at a place like Savers. What about underwear? Just say no. 380 Dairy Rd., Kahului, 871-7244.
runner-up: rainbow attic. 1881 s. kihei rd., 874-0884. (jr)

There’s body enhancers like strapless padded bras and pasties to beautiful Hawaiian print negligee sets and peek-a-boo lace teddies. Proprietor Stephanie Christensen insists (it says so over the door, twice) she reserves the right “to serve only those in love, those who have been in love, or those who want to be in love.” And yes, that does include purchasers of crotchless panties. 129 Lahainaluna Rd., Lahaina, 661-3117.

102 BEST TATTOO SHOP
skin deep tattoo
It’s nice to see that Hawai’i’s second oldest and Maui’s first tattoo shop, Skin Deep (established in 1976), still earns your top vote for slingin’ ink on Maui. Back in the whaling days, the shop’s location was a bordello. These days, Skin Deep houses two professional piercers and seven artists, all of whom have had at least five years and up to 16 years experience tattooing. Plus, with all the traffic they get from their prime spot on Front St., those years are like dog years—each one equals seven. And they’ve tattooed everyone from Shaq to Van Halen. Also, the art of Skin Deep’s longtime resident artist Spike Fuqua, is currently featured in the August issue of Club International . 626 Front St., Lahaina, 661-8531.

104 BEST LOCAL BOARD SHAPER
Bob Olson first started shaping boards for King Kamehameha I and has been a legend ever since. Okay, so maybe he hasn’t been around that long. But the king would have loved his designs. Ole puts much mana into each board, shaping and creating them as if they were for royalty. When on one of his boards getting barreled or going toes to the nose, you can’t help but think of those ancient Hawaiians surfing the coast of Maui just like you. 277 Wili Ko Pl., Lahaina, 661-3459.
