Open since 1957, which is a little after the Maui Historical Society received its charter, the Bailey House Museum is the island’s best historical treasure trove. The museum itself has the largest collection of Hawaiian artifacts in the county, many of which date to the missionary days. Their archives, which are open to researchers, have a further 2,000 artifacts and 8,000 photographs. Missionary teacher Edward Bailey constructed the house itself in 1833, and its been on the National and Hawaii Registers of Historic Places since 1972. 2375A Main St., Wailuku; 808-244-3326; Mauimuseum.org. @apignataro
