TESORO NOT SO REFINED ANYMORE
“Record crude-oil costs.” That, according to the Jan. 15 Honolulu Star-Bulletin, is why Tesoro is cutting gasoline refinement at its Kapolei plant by more than a quarter. That’s 26 percent. I know, life must be really harsh and unforgiving if you’re a refiner. They’re not made of stone, you know. The idea behind the plan to cut production is, of course, that Tesoro needs to make sure gas prices stay exactly where they are right now, which is somewhere around the level of VERY HIGH. Otherwise, their profit margins will be in jeopardy. And no God-fearing American would ever allow that!

NO RECORDS!
Wailuku Water Co. rises a few notches this week on word that they’ve been run by cunning geniuses for at least the last century. According to the Jan. 17 Maui News, company president Avery Chumbley—a former state senator—admitted to the state Commission on Water Resource Management that his company has no ditch flow records for the period 1987 to 1997. None. Maybe they’re misplaced, maybe not. No way to tell, really. That means Chumbley has no idea at all how much water his company took from the Iao, Waihee, Waiehu and Waikapu streams during that entire decade. Oh, and complicating matters is the fact that his firm has no ditch flow records at all—misplaced or otherwise—before 1962. Not a one—and the company was founded in 1862. How smart is that? Records get subpoenaed, but if you don’t have the records to begin with… MTW
