In addition to some of the more familiar faces, MauiTime would like to acknowledge some of the young, up-and-coming surfers of this island.
Dave Sweedler: How long have you lived here?
Luke Gordon: Sixteen years. I was born and raised on Maui.
Sweedler: Where are your favorite places to surf?
Gordon: Windmills left and Honolua Bay.
Sweedler: Who are the local surfers you look up to?
Gordon: My brother Bogie, Shane dog, Tai Van Dyke, Steve Cooney and all the bros who have helped me over the years.
Sweedler: Do you surf in contests, and how have you done?
Gordon: Just the ones that come around, I got first in the boys at the Hi-Tech competition at Ho`okipa and first in the junior mens at the Lahaina Harbor surf contest.
Sweedler: Are you sponsored?
Gordon: Yes, I am. Maui Wood Wear helps me with contests and provides me with all the jewelry I need to keep the girls happy. I am also looking for other sponsors.
Sweedler: What could you offer a sponsor?
Gordon: A surfer who is a gentlemen in and out of the water. I also have much respect for the ocean. Being that surfing is at the top of my agenda, sponsors would benefit with lots of publicity, displaying their products through my surfing.
Sweedler: What have you been up to this summer?
Gordon: A little running and swimming, and lots of couch surfing. This summer’s been flat; I hope to experience a real surf adventure someday, where the true essence of surfing can still be found.
Sweedler: What is Maui Time?
Gordon: Everyone showing Aloha; and when the waves are good, everyone’s happy. I’d like to thank Maui Time Magazine for giving me the opportunity to have an interview.
