A University of Hawaii lab team is reaching out to snorkelers to participate in a study about perceptions, attitudes and preferences concerning coastal water quality on Maui. Water quality is an issue of concern to all Maui residents, and to all those who visit here seeking to experience Maui’s beaches and coral reef environment firsthand, according to the University group.
The study, headed by Dr. Kirsten Oleson, “aims to ‘count what counts’ by working at the local level to inform community management strategies.” Oleson is seeking broad participation from residents and visitors alike for her research. Anyone who has ever snorkeled is eligible to participate in the study and can visit Olesonlab.org/survey to take part in an online survey.
In addition, the team from Oleson’s lab will be on Maui the week of Sept. 14 so residents and visitors may have the chance to encounter a surveyor in person; the team also will be distributing surveys to locations around Maui that cater to snorkelers, providing an opportunity potential participants to complete a physical copy of the survey.
Oleson’s study will be ongoing through September. For more information, contact Dr. Kirsten Oleson at 808-956-8864 or by email at koleson@hawaii.edu.
