Bad news for opponents of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and Monsanto in particular: Honolulu Civil Beat and the Associated Press are reporting that the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has struck down three county measures dealing with GMOs and pesticides in Hawaii, including Maui’s famous ballot measure, passed in the 2014 election.
“The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals concluded Friday that Hawaii state pesticide law is comprehensive, and that the Legislature intended it to be ‘uniform and exclusive of additional, local rules,'” Civil Beat reported today. “That means county ordinances governing agriculture that were overturned by a federal judge in 2014 and 2015 will not go into effect.”
According to the Associated Press, “a group pushing for more regulation of genetically modified crops says it is considering all legal options, including an appeal.”
Obviously we’ll be hearing a lot more about this in the coming days and weeks…
