Pissed off parents converged in Wailuku yesterday to protest “furlough Fridays” (which is nearing catch-phrase status, by the way). The Maui News estimated there were about 60 people in attendance, a decent turnout for a Wednesday morning.
People’s anger is clearly building on this issue, and state officials are going to start to feel the heat. The ones who fight this now (or put on the appearance of fighting it) will be rewarded by their constituents come reelection time, and my guess is politicians who feel vulnerable will realize this fact. Whether anything can or will be accomplished–with the teacher’s union having already cast its vote and Lingle having tossed up her hands–is another matter.
