So Baby Donald managed to put on his big-boy pants last night and make it through an entire address before a joint session of Congress without calling anyone evil, denouncing a department store chain for not selling his daughter’s crappy clothing line or punting a newborn puppy into the visitors’ gallery. How marvelously presidential of the guy! He’s already got a lock on the 2020 election!
Sigh. Of course, the old game show host is still the same sputtering, white supremacist fool who thinks he knows everything but can’t resist showing us how truly ignorant and bigoted he is. He’s still a huckster who lies as often as he takes breaths, demonizes anyone who isn’t a privileged white male and holds the rule of law in utter contempt (Slate‘s Michelle Goldberg wrote some of the sharpest post-speech analysis, which you can read here).
Pundits like CNN’s Van Jones may have gushed over Trump’s speech, but it’s refreshing to see Hawaii’s two U.S. Senators (both Democrats, of course) weren’t having any of it.
“With this President, I pay attention to what he does more than what he says because in his first month in office, Donald Trump’s actions have not lived up to the clichés he delivered tonight,” Sen. Mazie Hirono said in a news release sent out shortly after the speech ended. “He stands by executive orders that have spread fear and chaos throughout the country. Tonight he called for repealing the Affordable Care Act and replacing it with rhetoric. He also clearly called for school vouchers, and in this he has the right Education Secretary who does not believe in public education. For all his rhetoric about national security and American interests, he had absolutely nothing to say about getting to the bottom of Russian interference with our democracy. No matter what the President said tonight, I remain resolved to resist his dangerous, divisive actions.”
Sen. Brian Schatz was in complete agreement. “The speech that was written for the President was conventional in terms of Republican policies, but the actions of this administration in its early days have been radical and reckless,” he said in his own news release. “I will continue to work with my colleagues to seek opportunities for bipartisan compromise on behalf of Hawai‘i and the nation, but to the extent that this administration tries to undermine the rule of law or American values, I will resist.”
