With the Hawaii Primary Election just a couple weeks away, we’re neck-deep in political endorsements. Here’s a batch from the Hawaii Democratic Party’s Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) Caucus.
“The GLBT Caucus used a combination of surveys, candidate forums, and voting records to compile the list of supportive candidates,” state’s the caucus’ July 18 news release on the endorsements. “Due to the number of supportive candidates the Caucus had to come up with a way to differentiate between candidates in races that have multiple Democrats running in the primary.”
What that means is that anyone with an “Advocate” rating “has gone above and beyond in support of LGBT rights” while a “Supporter” rating “supports LGBT rights.” Anyway, here are the results for candidates of interest to Maui.
Governor Neil Abercrombie not only got an Advocate rating, but was the only one in that race to get any rating at all (would you expect anything less for the guy who called for last year’s same sex marriage special legislative session?).
In the Lieutenant Governor’s race, state Senator Clayton Hee got an Advocate rating while Maui’s own Shan Tsutsui (who’s also the incumbent) got a Supporter rating.
There were no ratings or endorsements given out for anyone running in the Second Congressional District.
For Hawaii state Senate candidates, Maui Senators Gil Keith-Agaran, Roz Baker and J. Kalani English all received endorsements (there were Advocate or Supporter designations given out in these races). And in the state House of Representatives, Joseph Souki, Angus McKelvey, Kaniela Ing and Kyle Yamashita also got endorsements. Maui Representatives Mele Carroll and Justin Woodson, who voted against the same sex marriage bill last year, did not get any endorsement.
