Old Maui High School plans to commemorate its 100th birthday at the Hamakuapoko campus with a Centennial Celebration Sept. 13-15, at which a newly-discovered painting of the old campus’ historic auditorium will be the highlighted keepsake.
Discovered by Jeff Reiss at a yard sale, the watercolor of Old Maui High School’s auditorium/gym–fondly referred to as “The Barn”–was painted by Kunio Ogawa, a 1935 Maui High School grad. Ogawa took up painting after serving in the U.S. Army’s 100th Infantry Battalion and re-created many of Maui’s landscapes and buildings on canvases until his death at the age of 92.
After purchasing the painting years ago, Reiss has now donated it to Friends of Old Maui High School. They plan on creating a limited-edition glass display paperweight of the painting to sell at the Centennial Celebration. The original painting will also be on display at the event, along with other Saber memorabilia.
The weekend event will celebrate a century of building community and is expected to bring together more than a thousand Maui High alumni, families and friends. The celebration will include a traditional luau, special displays and even performances by former cheerleaders and talented alumni.
