Recycling scrap metal and broken-down cars can be tricky, especially on Molokai. The County of Maui Environmental Management Solid Waste Division’s Molokai Metals Facility (MMF) only accepts metals during certain times in the year. But residents who’ve been saving their metals may be thrilled that the recycling facility opens today and will be taking scrap metals through Sept. 8.
In the past closure period, the county has made a few improvements. Workers poured a concrete slab so metal no longer has to be processed over the dirt. There were also a few safety measures and hazardous waste considerations made to the facility.
MMF will be open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8am to 2:30pm. It will accept vehicles, appliances, metals, tires, batteries, motorcycles, propane tanks, roofing, gutters, engine parts, mowers, bicycles, and other ferrous or nonferrous scrap metals. Anyone bringing automobiles, trucks or motorcycles will need to fill out a vehicle acceptance form and file a Statement of Junking.
MMF is located at the Moloka’i-Naiwa Landfill on Maunaloa Highway. For more information call 808-658-9029 or go to mauicounty.gov/solidwaste. If you need assistance moving materials from your home, then please call Community Work Day at 808-877-2524 to schedule a pick-up before Aug. 10. Program assistance is limited.
