So today state Representatives Cynthia Thielen, R-Kailua, and Kaniela Ing, D-South Maui, unveiled their big industrial hemp bill.
“There is a huge groundswell of support from the general public and members of the agriculture sector to legalize industrial hemp,” said Ing in a House news release today. “While hemp is not a magic bullet for Hawaii’s struggling agriculture industry, it does deserve our consideration, especially with the closing of sugar operations by HC&S I believe industrial hemp now has bi-partisan support, as well as widespread support across generations. It’s time has come.”
The 12-page bill is so new it doesn’t have a number yet, much less a page on the Hawaii Legislature website, but it does have actual text.
“The purpose of this Act is to authorize industrial hemp to be grown as part of research conducted under an agricultural pilot program or other agricultural research to study the growth, cultivation, or marketing of industrial hemp under specific agreement with and under authority of the state department of agriculture,” states the bill. ”
