Next month the Maui Police Department will conduct a study on officers wearing body cameras, states a news release sent out by the MPD this afternoon:
The Plans, Training, Research and Development Section has scheduled a one month feasibility study on the use of body-worn cameras. The study is scheduled to begin on Monday, April 6, 2015. The results of the study will assist the Maui Police Department in making informed decisions about the implementation of this technology in the future.
That’s it–the entire news release. Intrigued, we immediately fired off five questions on this study to Maui PD spokesman Lt. William Juan:
1. How many officers will take part in the study?
2. Will the body camera-equipped officers be deployed around the island or in just one district?
3. How often will they wear the cameras?
4. Will the cameras always be on or will the officers be able to turn them off and on?
5. Who manufactured the cameras they will wear?
But Juan refused to answer any of them. “There is no other information to be released at this time,” he emailed back.
