Are you an adult who still doesn’t know how to swim? Even here on Maui, which is surrounded by a vast ocean, adults who lack an ability to swim aren’t as rare as you might think. According to a Red Cross survey published last year, one in five people aren’t strong swimmers, yet most summer activities are planned around the water. Maui swim coach Janet Renner says this can be quite an embarrassment at best, while the Red Cross says it can be a drowning hazard at worst.
Renner will provide swim lessons for any adults who’ve always wanted to swim, or would like to overcome their fear of the water. The session starts on July 30 and runs Monday and Wednesday through Aug. 13. Classes are taught at Renner’s private pool, and the cost is $100.
“A majority of the folks overcome their fear of the water by expanding their awareness and understanding about the basics on what to do when in the water,” says Renner. “They can overcome this if they want to. I help by providing a compassionate safe environment, encouraging them by being right there with them as they go through the step-by-step process of overcoming their fears of the water.”
Renner says she has been teaching adults to swim for 25 years, mostly in Kihei. She also teaches swimming in the ocean and child classes. For more information on her schedule or to enroll, call 808-280-2756, email her at janet@swimprojanet.com or visit her website at swimprojanet.com.
