Maui High School captured one of the top honors at the April 27 awards gala for the 14th annual ‘Ōlelo Youth Xchange Statewide Student Video Competition. Students from Maui High School won in the Expert category with the production “Women in Technology.” The winning video competed against those created by students from public, charter and private schools across the state.
For their win, Maui High School was presented a commercial-grade Sony SLR video cameras and a 24-70 mm lens–with a combined value totaling more than $2,400.
Students in OYX compete in three age divisions: elementary, intermediate and high school. Previous winners and students with professional experience compete in the Junior Expert (kindergarten through middle school) and Expert (high school and college) categories.
Additional high-definition Sony digital video cameras (valued at $650 each) were awarded to each of the winners in the three age divisions of competition; since its inception, ‘Ōlelo Youth Xchange has awarded more than 600 video cameras to schools throughout Hawai‘i.
Maui Waena Intermediate School took two honors, one for Malama Honua in the Malama Honua category and one for Disability Does Not Mean Inability in the animation category. Montessori School of Maui in Makawao won for Mission to Mars in the short category.
OYX judges selected winners from 904 entries based on subject impact and technical production. These panels included local news media, filmmaking professionals and, in the case of sponsored categories, subject experts.
The awards gala was held at the Sheraton Waikiki Resort. It was attended by more than 800 educators, student-producers and guests from across the state. The winners of the contest, the state’s oldest and largest of its type, were named from a total of 904 submissions.
The seven broad categories of 2017 competition include animation, mini-documentary, news, public service announcement, short, Expert and Junior Expert.
Eleven sponsored categories this year include Clean Energy Future, Creating Peace, Fight the Bite, Forest Health Hawaii, Mā̄lama Honua, Start Living Healthy, Storm Water Hero, Taking Assessments Seriously, The Value of Water, Traffic Safety and Vote to Rise.
This awards gala was cablecast live on ‘Ōlelo. The show will be repeated on Channel 53 on Wednesday, May 10 at 7pm, Sunday, May 14 at 10pm, Monday, May 15 at 3pm and Sunday, May 21 at 8am. The cablecast will also be made available for viewing starting May 21 on ‘Ōlelo Video On-Demand Channel 52, at Youtube.com/olelocm and on Olelo.org/olelonet.
‘Ōlelo’s mission is to strengthen island voices and advance community engagement through innovative media. Established in 2003, ‘Ōlelo Community Media’s Youth Xchange is Hawai‘i’s largest and first issues-oriented statewide student video competition; the program was initially developed to help give island keiki a voice to tell stories in a variety of video formats and about subjects that are meaningful to them.
‘Ōlelo Community Media is a private, nonprofit provider of community access television services and resources on O‘ahu. ‘Ōlelo airs programs of special community interest on its four cable channels on Oceanic Time Warner and Hawaiian Telcom: 49, 53, 54 and 55, as well as HD channels 1049 and 1053 on Hawaiian Telcom. On-demand programming is also available on Oceanic Channel 50 (State Government) and Channel 52 (public).
