Angus McKelvey, son of former Lahaina News owner* Joan McKelvey, is (like just about everyone else in the Hawaii state Legislature) a Democrat, but that doesn’t tell you much about his time in office. He’s best known for advocating greater infrastructure spending and also for supporting tax credits for domestic filmmakers and start-ups wishing to locate here, but his legislative history is all over the map. In 2012, he sponsored resolutions that would urge “the National Agricultural Statistics Service to use green coffee, instead of parchment equivalent, as the basis for valuing Hawaii’s coffee crops” (HR 105, approved) and declare “Saturdays and Sundays to be ‘Eat Local, Buy Local’ Day in Hawaii” (HR 27, approved). He also pushed unsuccessfully for bills that would ask the state Librarian to convene a task force on library concessions (HCR 102), grant a 20-year lease for “one stand-alone casino in Waikiki not in a hotel” (HB 2788) and require state departments “to attempt to sell or donate office equipment to schools, nonprofits, or salvage businesses before disposal” (HB 2712). Isn’t legislating fun?
