Looks like we erred in our Candidates To Ignore section of our Hawaii Primary Election Endorsements issue. Two non-partisan candidates–Heath Beasley, a U.S. Navy vet who is running for the U.S. Senate seat currently occupied by retiring Democrat Senator Daniel Akaka, and Molokai homestead farmer/musician Kanohowailuku Helm, who is running for the 7th District state Senate seat currently held by incumbent Democrat J. Kalani English–were mistakenly included in that list.
Our belief was that since they were running unopposed, they would automatically advance to the general election in November. In fact, Hawaii election rules indicate that to do so they must win either 10 percent of the vote in the primary or “receive a vote equal to the lowest vote received by the partisan candidate who was nominated in the Primary Election for the office.”
While MauiTime does not endorse either candidate, we do believe voters should understand their options when it comes to voting and we regret the error.
