Kahului-based Haleakala Solar was ranked number one in the state for being a great company that positively impacts the environment. Solar Power World magazine named the solar energy contractor number one in the state–and 95th in the nation–in its annual list of North America’s top solar contractors; Haleakala Solar was number one in the state of Hawaii last year as well.
Solar Power World compiles its Top 500 Solar Contractors List to acknowledge the work of solar contractors across the U.S. and Canada. The companies on the list are ranked for growing the economy, providing jobs and offering electricity consumers a choice about how they get their power.
“The companies on this year’s list exude solar-business brilliance, and they deserve to be recognized not only for being great companies but also for how their work positively impacts the environment,” said Kathie Zipp, managing editor of Solar Power World. Solar energy is a renewable resource with great potential to significantly reduce our nation’s greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association, a national solar industry association.
Haleakala Solar–which employs 160 workers–installed 10.21 total megawatts of solar in 2015. Since its founding in 1977, the company has installed 74.05 total megawatts of solar. The company expanded from a one-man operation installing solar hot water systems to a business that now offer services in solar photovoltaic, energy storage systems, energy management as well as solar hot water.
“Our success is due to our loyal customer base and our dedicated, hard working employees,” said James Whitcomb, Haleakala Solar CEO. “Without them, we would not have been so successful.”
The U.S. solar market is expected to grow 119% this year, according to global research firm GTM Research. While a majority of solar electricity is produced at large, utility-scale solar power plants, the greatest number of solar jobs are located with companies like Haleakala Solar.
“No one can deny that local companies are supporting the growth of the solar industry and the economy as a whole,” Zipp said. “Our Top Solar Contractors are the face of the industry–meeting homeowners and business leaders on doorsteps every day.”
