Maui’s Grow Some Good community program raised $37,000 for Maui’s farmers, chefs, teachers, scientists and entrepreneurs. The non-profit organization hosted its second annual Taste of School Gardens event on Mar. 8 at Hotel Wailea’s Sunset Lawn. Several local chefs and more than 350 school garden supporters came together for the “good things growing” event, which benefited students of seven South and Central Maui school garden programs.
The Taste event featured nine restaurant stations where guests sampled gourmet dishes prepared from local and school garden-grown ingredients. Maui chefs on hand included Cameron Lewark (Spago); Brian Etheredge (Capische? and Il Teatro); Christopher Kulis (The Market by Capische); Roger Stettler (Ferraro’s Bar e Ristorante); Daniel Fiske (PrivateMauiChef.com); Eric Mitchell (The Outrigger Pizza Company); Corey Waite (Monkeypod Kitchen by Merriman); Brian Murphy (Café Carmen); and Nicholas Porreca (Fabiani’s Pizza & Bakery).
Dean Wong, Executive Director of Imua Family Services, served as Master of Ceremonies. Music was provided by BrownChicken BrownCow String Band.
Proceeds from the evening went to Grow Some Good, which currently provides support to school garden programs at Kihei Elementary School, Kamali’i Elementary School, Wailuku Elementary School, Kahului Elementary School, Lokelani Intermediate School, Kihei Charter Middle School and Baldwin High School.
