Many of us compost at our homes in an effort to reduce, reuse and recycle. This year, let’s make an extra effort and compost our holiday trees. The Recycling Section of the County of Maui is encouraging all residents to take their Christmas trees to local composting facilities. Tree composting services will begin on Dec. 26 and all trees heading to compost must be free of decorations, tinsel and lights.
Central Maui residents can leave their trees with EKO Compost at the Central Maui Landfill, which is open Mon-Sat, 6am-3pm.
Kihei residents can take their trees to Pacific Green Waste and Compost, located off Pi’ilani Hwy. They are open Mon-Fri, 7am-5pm, and Sat, 8am-4pm. Pacific Green Waste charges $5 per tree and is closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day.
In West Maui, you can take trees to the Olowalu Convenience Center, which is open Mon-Sat, 8am-2:30pm.
Upcountry residents can leave their trees curbside for pick-up by the Rotary Club of Upcountry Maui. The organization will offer curbside pick-up starting Sat., Jan. 4, 2014, from 8am to 2pm. They’re asking for a $10 donation per tree, which will go toward supporting local Rotary projects. Pukalani and Kula residents can call 808-878-2177 to arrange for pick-up. Paia, Haiku and Makawao residents should call 808-298-2393 by Jan. 1 to schedule pickup. Trees should be left on the curb before 8:00 a.m. on the day of pick-up, which will be determined when you call. Make checks payable to “Rotary Club of Upcountry Maui.”
County recycling officials point out that trees cannot be taken to traditional recycling centers or community centers. Oh, and please: don’t dump them in parking lots. For more recycling information email recycle.maui@mauicounty.gov or call the Recycle Maui County Hotline at 808-270-7880.
