Don Guzman isn’t your typical County Council candidate. A private attorney now, he spent five years as a deputy prosecuting attorney and did a few years as a legislative aide. If his Primary Election night party was any guide, Guzman has also mobilized nearly the entire Filipino community on Maui. He’s running one of the most organized campaigns of anyone on the ballot, which is remarkable considering he’s just 42 and hasn’t previously run for anything. As far as what Guzman would do if elected, that’s beyond unknown. His backers include major land developers as well as the environmentalists at the Sierra Club. There isn’t a mere ideological schism between forces like that, either: one proposes projects that the other opposes.
