The good folks in Occupy Wall Street-Maui, GMO-Free Maui and Occupy Monsanto Maui (which may, in fact, all be the same folks) are holding a big protest tomorrow, Tuesday, Feb. 21. From 12 noon until 6:30 pm, they’ll be standing at the North Kihei Road/Piilani Highway intersection, holding signs and raising hell, all for the cause of trying to convince lawmakers to label foods containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
“This is the first SIMULTANEOUS PROTEST/rally on THREE ISLANDS [other rallies will take place on Kauai and Oahu], probably since they petitioned not to be annexed by the US!!!” activist Courtney Bruch emailed me on Feb. 18. “We will be protesting to call attention to the gmo corn field in full view of the hwy, and because the legislature is dragging its feet in scheduling hearings for a GMO labeling bill for Hawaii.”
Given the groups’ recent troubles protesting in front of the Monsanto operations in Kihei, they ask that anyone joining them to “please observe the requirements of Maui County ordinance 12.42, maintaining distances of 6′ from the hwy and 50′ from the intersection, while participating in this event.”
Those wanting more information about GMOs should check out the protest group’s video here.
