‘Ulana ‘Ie: Beginning Hawaiian Basketry

This two-day workshop will teach participants how to start and finish a basket with a cover in the tradition of Hawaiian Basketry. Participants will learn how baskets were traditionally made with 'ie'ie (Freycinetia arborea) and will explore the process from start to finish, including gathering of 'ie'ie, preparation and cleaning of the rootlets, and the final weaving into beautiful various pieces such as hinaii (baskets), hina'i i'a (fish traps), mahiole (helmet) and ki'i akua (war god images). Tuition: $95 for members…
