Bentos & Banquets by Bernard
The portions here are so big that one plate could easily feed two. Considering my budget, this is a good thing. Bentos & Banquets has a rotating menu, so you can sample different local favorites throughout the week. If you’re dining alone or just can’t stomach a whole plate lunch, they also offer Bobo lunches and salads. Open M-F 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., 85 N. Church St., Wailuku, 244-1124. $
McDonald’s
I have a friend who will be visiting Maui soon and I know she’ll want to taste local-style food. Too bad we’re too broke to be patrons of the more high-scale restaurants Maui has to offer. Luckily, McDonald’s has Hawaii-specific items on its menu. I know my friend will be amazed at the versatile breakfast potential of Spam, as well as it’s welcome inclusion in another Hawaii dish—saimin. Islandwide. $
W & F Washerette
When my friend starts wanting to mingle with locals AND eating something tasty, I’m going to take her here. I mean, how efficient is this? Not only can you do your laundry, you can also eat a heaping serving of the tastiest shave ice on the island at their snack shop. My favorite flavor is blue vanilla, but other flavors are guava, watermelon and lime. Obviously, this place is ideal if you’re a messy eater. Open daily 6 a.m. – 9 p.m. 125 S. Wakea Ave, Kahului 877-0353. $
Minit Stop
Weirdly enough, Spam Musubis aren’t a staple in the mainland diet, like they are here. This is disappointing because of the musubi’s masterful combination of food groups: Rice as a carbohydrate, seaweed as a vegetable and I think Spam could constitute as protein. Other Maui staples found here include inari sushi, chicken katsu and manapuas. Islandwide. $
Home Maid Bakery
The opposite of health food? The incredibly tasty, high calorie malasada. Home Maid Bakery serves fresh, hot malasadas in the wee hours of the morning, then again, later in the afternoon. Other delicacies found here are the haupia pie, manju, mochi and sugar-covered, cavity-inducing donut holes. Open daily 5 a.m. – 10 p.m., 1005 Lower Main St., Wailuku 244-4150. $ MTW
