CASANOVA
Ahh… Foccacia. Is there any better way to tempt the palate before sitting down to a sumptuous plate of pasta? Casanova’s servers will bring you excellent Foccacia that’s thin, not fluffy, with oil and vinegar. 1188 Makawao Ave., 572-0220. Open M-Sa 11:30 a.m.- 2 p.m. lunch, Daily 5:30-9:30 p.m. dinner. Pizza served until 11 p.m. on nights with entertainment. $$
TOMMY BAHAMA’S TROPICAL CAFE
Known for selling Caribbean-themed food and clothing—all of which leans toward the expensive side—Tommy’s also offers customers one really tasty freebie: bread. And not just any bread, either, but a giant, steaming roll that easily splits apart into four smaller rolls. And this bread is really good, but what makes it better is the little tub of cinnamon-flavored butter you get along with it. The Shops at Wailea, 875-9983. Open M-Th, Su 11 a.m.-10 p.m. F, Sa 11 a.m.-11 p.m.$$
MAUI TACOS
Just about any Mexican place with a salsa bar has pickled carrots free for the taking, but for some reason I like Maui Tacos’ the best. The carrots seem larger and spicier than other places. But please, I understand that the size of the carrots means that only a few will fit into one of those little salsa cups, but don’t be a pickled carrot hog and load up your arms with carrots. It won’t kill you to leave some for the rest of us. Located island-wide. $
LONGBOARDS KA`ANAPALI
This place, located in Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club at Ka‘anapali, offers seating right along the beach path. Like most places in Ka‘anapali, they serve pupus and fresh island fish. And while you’re waiting for your food, you can enjoy a basket of various fresh baked rolls. 100 Nohea Kai Dr., Ka‘anapali, 667-1200. Open nightly 5:30 – 9 p.m., Sa-Su breakfast 7 a.m. – 11 p.m.. $$
LIFE’S A BEACH
In what will hopefully spark an island-wide trend, Life’s a Beach recently began offering customers free Wi-Fi service. I’m not exactly sure why someone sitting on their patio would want to surf the Internet instead of simply relaxing and enjoying the wonderful people-watching possibilities, but it’s a free country. 1913 S. Kihei Rd., 891-8010. Open daily 11 a.m.-1:30 a.m. MTW
