UPCOUNTRY FRESH TAMALES AND MIXED PLATE
There is a reason why I’m listing Upcountry Fresh Tamales and Mixed Plate first. Actually, there are several reasons, but I’ll only get into the top two. Number one, they are close to my house so I go there often; and two, they really do have the best horchata on the island. Yeah, there’s a lot of yummy horchata out there, but is it homemade? This one is and it shows. It’s rich, creamy and slightly spicy. Totally addicting. Totally perfect. Open M-Sa 6 a.m. – 8 p.m. and Su 6 a.m. – 3 p.m. 55 Pukalani Street, 572-8258. $.
JUCA
Cruising the Maui Ocean Center? All those little fishies making you thirsty? I know what you need… Horchata! On your way back from Lahaina? Dehydrated after getting stuck in traffic for seven hours? I know what you need… Horchata! Broke up with your boyfriend? Ran over the dog and lost your job? I know what you need… And it ain’t horchata, but then again it may help. Juca’s got a great location and, you guessed it, good horchata. Open 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. Ma’alaea Shopping Center, 244-5993. $
FERNANDO’S
I’ll admit that I’m addicted to the chicken taco plate (hold the cheese, please) from Fernando’s. The thing I like about their horchata is that it comes in size “ginormous.” Seriously, they give you enough horchata for a family of seven in one cup. Open Sun 8:30 a.m. – 7 p.m.; M-Sa 8:30 a.m. – 9 p.m. 270 Dairy Rd., Maui Market Place, Kahului, 873-7759. $
AMIGO’S
I can’t believe that I hadn’t eaten at Amigo’s until early this past week. It’s good! What I found interesting though, is that while the food that I had wasn’t what I would consider “spicy,” their horchata was. Yes folks, if you want a refreshing glass of horchata that’s heavy on the spice and low on the sweet, Amigo’s is the place for you. I’ll be back for another glass for sure. Open various times, island wide locations. Kihei 879-9952, Kahului 872-9525, Lahaina 661-0210. $
MAUI TACOS
Maui Tacos is the belle of the ball. I don’t know a single person that hasn’t eaten at one of their numerous locations. I would label their horchata “refreshing” or as Rap Reiplinger as Auntie Marialani would say, “Not too sweet, not too rancid but jes’ right!” Island wide. $
