If you doubt that a food truck could be as good as its brick and mortar location, I’m with you. So recently, after seeing the Teddy’s Bigger Burgers Food Truck parked off of Kahului Beach road, I decided to put them to the test. The Lahaina Teddy’s Bigger Burgers is one of the best burger spots on the island. They have a cheerful, climate-controlled dining room with one of the most extensive–and customizable–burger menus on the island. How could a truck compete with that?
At the restaurant, your order Teddy’s burgers according to size, and the truck is no different. You can order a single or upsize as far as a quadruple burger, as your appetite dictates. Similarly, both Teddy’s restaurant and food truck burgers come with lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion and special sauce. While the restaurant has more topping customizations, the truck still offers plenty of add-ons like avocado, bacon, Teriyaki sauce, green chilis and cheese.
The truck also gives customers a few specials like their Western burger, Green Chile burger and the Bacado or Teriyaki chicken. Moreover, the Teddy’s Bigger Burger truck also offers turkey burgers, grilled and fried chicken breast sandwiches and their veggie burger.
As at Teddy’s in Lahaina, the truck lets you add fries, onion rings or tater tots to any burger. The truck lacks the restaurant’s scrumptious Roselani shakes and salads, but they couldn’t put everything on wheels. This truck is all about the sandwich, and I can appreciate that.
After ordering a few rounds of burgers from the truck, I can confirm they are the real deal. Because they’re made to order, expect to wait about 10 minutes for them to call your name. The fries, tots and onion rings come hot and crisp, freshly fried in the truck. The Teriyaki burger was a winner, and the Green Chili cheese burger was full of flavor. What I especially love about Teddy’s is the bun–a pillow of fluffy, white potato bread that absorbs the sauce and serves as the perfect support for burger patty.
The Teddy’s Bigger Burgers truck parks every week along Kahului Beach Road and its bright red and yellow logo decals–complete with a giant burger picture and red and white checker print–make it easy to spot. They usually park on the Wailuku side of the small boat harbor. Generally they are there from Wednesdays to Fridays, except when they’re appearing at special events.
The best way to find their location is by following their Facebook page. They also show up at the Maui Brewing Co. Kihei brew pub. This week, you will find them along Kahului Beach Road on Thursday and Friday from 10:30am to 3pm.
UPDATE: The truck is off for the holidays but will be back in action starting January 5, 2016.
