Joe’s Nuevo Latino, Wailea’s newest hot spot, has some exciting news to go along with their spectacular Latin cuisine. The reincarnation of Joe’s Bar and Grill has a completely new look, bar and menu, just to catch you up. Chef Gary Johnson is at the helm for this thrilling new Latin culinary journey that awaits you. And the bar has the longest list of Spanish drinks this gringa has seen.
I think what’s most rousing is the unchartered foodie territory that Latin cuisine offers. Raise your hand if you’ve seen enough Mai Tais and Macadamia nut-crusted mahi. But in this corner of Wailea, the exotic world of Central, South American and Spanish foods have been conquered, reinterpreted and served on share plates.
I asked Chef Johnson what he likes to make most on the menu. I know it was a loaded question, but Johnson replied with a twinkle in his eye: “The ceviche wins.” Without a doubt, the refreshing cold raw dish of fish and seafood with citrus is a summer winner. They have three: ahi tuna, coconut marinated and Peruvian-style seafood ceviches.
The menu has other treasures as well, dishes that employ plantain, cotija, poblano, chayote, masa, jicama, chimichurri, huancaina and Oaxaca. They may sound rough rolling off the tongue but in my mouth they’re riveting. The menu takes you through small plates or large, family-style entrees. There are plenty of veggie options on the small plates–asparagus, mushroom, pineapple salad, cucumber and tomato salad. The quail and the shrimp on corn cakes or chicken tamale are all divine. But resist the impulse to compare them to your favorite Mexican foods. If you step out of your familiar comfort zones, you’ll be impressed at how far you can go.
As if opening a new restaurant wasn’t enough, Joe’s Nuevo Latino just launched their new Happy Hour menu and cocktail list. You can get this special menu of items 4-6pm daily and at their Industry Happy Hour from 9pm to close. The carnitas bowl is hearty, with black beans, pickled red onion and tender rice for $9. The chips and salsa is an unusual combo of plantain and tortilla with their roasted Haiku tomato salsa. The skewered lengua with corn sofrito is my go-to plate, with the skewered octopus a close second. Then there’s the wonderful fried paella… Happy Hour menu ranges from $6 to $11 for plates, and the signature cocktails are $9 with wines $8 and cervezas $3.
Joe’s is also launching new daily specials on July 27th: Mojito Monday–$5 mojitos all night; Tamale Tuesday–$6 tamales all night; Wine Down Wednesday–half off all bottled wines; Thursday’s Club Tequila–half off special tequilas; Foodie Friday–three-course, two-drink tasting $39; Ceviche Saturday–half off ceviche; Sangria Sunday–$7 Sangria all night.
Club Tequila offers a chance to join the club–a list will be kept by the bar, a passport to all the tequila, if you will. Once you’ve tasted all of them, you get a t shirt and your name on a plaque. Consider it your credential as a tequila ambassador. Club membership also gets you VIP for events and Cock Fights.
Cock Fights? Yes, the bar is hosting their first ever Cock Fights on July 27 at 9pm. There, bartenders will go toe-to-toe to create the best cocktail, judged by a panel of professionals. Remember, this restaurant is owned and operated by the guys who brought us the Knife Fights at Cow Pig Bun. Other great events are in the works like Happy Hour Flamenco music on Friday and Saturday nights starting in August. Joe’s still offers their 20 percent kama‘aina discount, and while you can’t get it on the other daily items on special, you can get it on any other food you order. Provecho!
