Are you a cocktail connoisseur? Rum is a quintessential ingredient in a lot of tiki drinks, the ubiquitous Mai Tai, and mojitos. If you are ready to take rum to the next level, submit your cocktail in the Rum Scrum contest. You have to use Maui’s Deep Island Rum in your recipe, and showcase other local ingredients as well. The Westin Kā‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas has teamed up with Hawaii Sea Spirits to sponsor the contest.
“Our purpose is to align with the active culinary movement of Farm to Table by creating a similar avenue to showcase cocktails. With OCEAN Organic Vodka’s incredible success in designing a new rum that is produced locally, we found the perfect stage to align the resort’s initiatives in sustainable cuisine,” says Brandon Maeda, Director of Food & Beverage at The Westin Kā‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas.
Contestants do not have to bartenders or booze professionals, any recipe that follows the rules and performs well on the palate is accepted, just go online by May 31, 2015 and submit your recipe at deepislandrum.com. The winning quintessential Hawaiian rum cocktail will earn a spot on bar menus at The Westin Kā‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas, as well as get you a three-night stay at this AAA four diamond resort in Maui, Hawaii and $500 cash. Finalists will be announced and notified by June 10, 2015.
“You can be a professional bartender or spirits aficionado, an amateur mixologist, backyard bartender, or anything in between! Follow the rules and give it your best pour,” says Shay Smith, CEO of Hawaii Sea Spirits, makers of Deep Island Hawaiian Rum.
Here is the fine print:
Themed to find the quintessential Hawaiian rum cocktail, submissions must include full recipe and method for one (1) serving of a cocktail. Key criteria include using no more than 2 oz. of alcohol (all alcohols combined). Deep Island Hawaiian Rum should be the main alcohol ingredient. No pre-infused alcohol is allowed.
Entrants must complete a registration form as well as provide a recipe and high resolution photograph of their cocktail (minimum 300 DPI) for online submission or email RecipeContest@DeepIslandRum.com no later than 11:59 p.m. on May 31, 2015.
Judging criteria includes the following: completed application, high resolution photo of cocktail, taste, presentation, use of fresh ingredients, creativity and alignment with the “quintessential Hawaiian rum cocktail” theme.
Contestants cannot be directly affiliated with Hawaii Sea Spirits or The Westin Kā‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas. The four finalists will be profiled and judged at the “Rum Scrum Cocktail Contest” scheduled to be held LIVE on Saturday, July 25 at The Westin Kā‘anapali Ocean Resort Villas on North Kā‘anapali Beach, Maui. Following the cocktail contest, local celebrity chefs will work with teams of students from the Maui Culinary Academy in a “Culinary Rum Scrum” to design a distinctive dish using a secret ingredient. The event will benefit Maui Culinary Academy.
