The Queen’s Birthday
In a strange turn of events I happen to be blogging about fasting and then Blizzards in the same breath of air this week. How can we resist this American institution of dining? The Dairy Queen turns 70, and the blizzard is 25 and that means its rocking 25 cent deals. Buy one Blizzard get the second for just 25 cents. Just to let you know I am not the only one excited about this, here is the buzz on Twitter:
Dairy Queen first came to Hawaii in the 40’s. Sunny Thom opened the first one on Li’iha Street on Oahu in 1949. As far as I can tell, its not there anymore, but Dairy Queen has held on strong with 10 locations through the islands. Luckily for us Maui folks we have two on Maui, one in South Maui and one in Lahaina. You can cool the hot days in Lahaina by getting in the Lahaina Cannery Mall air conditioned bubble and hunker down with a couple of Blizzards. Hawaii based Dairy Queens are all locally owned and operated. Patrick Mehring owns and operates the Dairy in in Lahaina, and is truly excited about this promo.“The “Buy One Blizzard, Get One for 25 Cents” promotion is our most popular one of the year because everyone just loves Blizzards. With a second Blizzard for just 25 cents, this is one luxury everyone can afford,” Mehring says.
In Kihei we can’t hide out in the air con to eat ice cream, but you can still enjoy their cool sweet creamy treats. The blizzard concept, to mix softserve ice cream with cookies, sundae toppings, or candy has been copied in many different forms since its introduction in 1985, but Dairy Queen really does it consistently good. I like that the vanilla softserve serves as the perfect base for whatever you decide to add, and their tricky signature move of holding it upside down with the lid off before the hand it over makes me lunge for the cup as if they might spill some of my Blizzard out. Dairy Queen in Kihei is owned by Chris Schauer who hopes to see us all drop by this week, saying, “Come in this week and take advantage of this great deal for families. Now more than ever everyone can use a little sweet treat!”
