If you’re like me (not Swiss), Switzerland brings two things to mind: cheese with holes in it and international neutrality. Of course, this is a very narrow view of a country rich in cultural traditions and history (I’m assuming). For example, I just learned that Switzerland gained independence from German rule way back in 1291. This is important because you can celebrate Switzerland’s freedom at Brigit & Bernard’s Garden Cafe this week! Brigit & Bernard’s is often considered a German restaurant, but chef/owner Bernard Weber actually hails from the land of great skiiing, cuckoo clocks and secret bank accounts. Enjoy live music (“dorfmusikanten”), Swiss trivia games and a Jodel contest, along with tasty traditional Swiss cuisine (raclette, bratwurst and aargauer ruebli suppe) in an all-you-can-eat buffet. $38 all-you-can-eat buffet, $17.50 raclette only, $17.50 bratwurst platter only. Aug 1-3, 6pm-close. Brigit & Bernard’s Garden Cafe, Kahului (335 Hoohana St.); 808-877-6000; urbanspoon.com/Brigit-Bernards-Garden-Cafe-Kahului.
