Ruth Chris Steakhouse Lahaina Nickel and Nickel Wine Dinner 6:30 pm June 25, 2011, 808-661-8815 to reserve.
Lahaina’s Ruth Chris Steakhouse has a new Executive Chef, named Wes Taaffe who is showcasing his collection of creative dishes against the sublime backdrop of Nickel and Nickel wines for a five course dinner this Saturday in yet another opportunity to expand your foodie palate and waistband. Charles Fredy, Advanced Sommelier, of Chambers and Chambers will be hosting the event and guiding attendees through the characteristics of the vineyard sites and appellations which make each of the wines unique.
Nickel and Nickel was established by the partners in Far Niente, with a philosphy of creating 100 persent varietal single vineyard wines. Joan Stagnaro of Chambers and Chambers filled me on the basics, “Single Vineyard or vineyard designated wines are wines that come from only one vineyard on the lable. This is a fairly new practice in California where blending has long been the standard. Incidentally this has long been practiced in France and is the basis of many French wine laws.”
Highlights include watercress and speck with seared diver scallops and the ’08 chardonnay, the steak rossini and 07 cab, a strawberry neopolitan and ’06 dolce.

Nickel & Nickel
2008 Chardonnay, Searby Ranch, Russian River Valley
The floral aromatics are more pronounced in the 2008 Searby Vineyard Chardonnay, which distinguishes it from our other Nickel & Nickel wines. The Muscat and mineral notes harmonize nicely with its natural orange, lemon-lime acidity, producing a very succulent blend. This combination of fruit and acidity is quite refreshing and the addition of rich, French oak creates a wine that is lively and persistent. The beauty of this wine is that it can be enjoyed upon release or it can lay down to evolve new complexities.
$25 glass/$100 bottle
2007 Merlot, Suscol Vineyard, Napa Valley
There is no mistaking this wine with any other. This 2007 Suscol Ranch Merlot has briary aromatics with a dark plum and wild berry flavor that is juicy upon entry. Layer upon layer of dust, earth, herb and cedar intermix with the fruit, creating a complex medley of flavors. Its unique, supple character is full and lively on the palate. From year to year, this wine’s distinctiveness lies in the lush, velvety tannins that expand upon the initial sip and develop with richness through the finish.
$19 glass/$75 bottle
2007Cabernet Sauvignon, Branding Iron Vineyard, Oakville
The 2007 Branding Iron Cabernet Sauvignon displays forward bright, clear and ripe black cherry aromas. There is a sense of juiciness to the wine upon entry. The softness is carried by the wine’s classic structure as it continues to gain in presence and depth while moving back on the palate. The tremendous length and layering of flavors is a quality that we associate with this and other west Oakville vineyards.
$29 glass/$115 bottle
The 2007 C.C. Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon offers dark cherry fruit flavors that are bright and ripe at the same time. There are hints of “Rutherford Dust” and even a touch of black tea that complement the floral notes of the fruit. The wine is silky at entry and then seems to get fleshier and bigger as it expands on the middle palate before melting into a long finish.
$29 glass/$115 bottle
