Every day in Lahaina, Kimo’s dishes out towering slices of their macadamia nut ice cream, chocolate fudge and cookie crumble dessert known as Hula Pie, a local favorite that has now been nationally recognized in the July/August issue of Food Network Magazine as Hawaii’s best ice cream treat (Duke’s, Hula Grill and Leilani’s in Kaanapali, which are also part of the TS Restaurants chain, also serve Hula Pie). Kimo’s own menu boasts that Hula Pie is “what the sailors swam to shore for,” and it seems that Food Network agrees.
The magazine issue, now on newsstands nationwide, chose one sweet treat from every one of the 50 United States to create a national map of a variety of frozen summer desserts. Describing the generous portioning of the unique dessert as a “behemoth wavelike mass,” Food Network gives Hula Pie the top prize for Hawaii. Winners from other states range from adult ice cream sodas and impossibly large sundaes to one-of-a-kind avocado ice cream served in a shell of chocolate.
