Island Restaurants Lend their Support to Celebrate Hospice Maui’s 29th Anniversary
October 19th 2010, Kahului, HI—For over 29 years, Hospice Maui has been meeting the
needs of Maui’s terminally ill patients and their familiesfrom maximizing quality of
life and providing in-home care to grief support and counseling. On Tuesday, November
16th some of Maui’s most popular restaurants are inviting you to show your appreciation
by “Dining out for Hospice.” Bring your friends and family and enjoy a great meal at one
of twenty participating restaurants island-wide who will donate a percentage of sales
(between 10-25%) to Hospice Maui on that day.
The most important thing to bring to participate in Dine Out for Hospice is your appetite.
Whether it’s sushi, steak, pizza or greens, you’ll find a restaurant that will satisfy your
appetite and your budget. Plan a night on the town or gather colleagues for an office lunch.
Invite your family, friends, and neighbors.
“The downturn in the economy has affected almost everybody. If we all join together to
help our local businesses that support so many people with jobs and paychecks, and then
the businesses turn around and support our local nonprofits, then we all benefit while also
helping to grow our local economy” states Hospice Maui Director Greg Lagoy.
A complete list of participating restaurants will be posted on the Hospice Maui website at
www.hospicemaui.org and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/hospicemaui. If you cannot
participate in Dine Out for Hospice but would like to make a contribution to Hospice Maui
contact Kathy Kameda at (808) 244-5555.
Hospice Maui: We believe that at the end of our lives, we are each entitled to care that relieves pain and symptoms. We each deserve to be cared for by those who understand the emotional and spiritual turmoil that dying sometimes brings. We each deserve the opportunity to express our hopes and fears, and to be heard, honored, and supported. And we are each entitled to live our last weeks and days in the setting of our choice, treated according to our beliefs and values.
Hospice care is quality, compassionate care to maximize the comfort and dignity of those with a progressive incurable disease who are probably in the last months of their life such as cancer, heart disease, lung disease, and others. We provide expert symptom control and pain management. But unlike other forms of care which focus only on the patient’s physical needs, we also provide emotional and spiritual support for the patient and loved ones, as well as bereavement support for a year after the death.
The major health insurers in Hawaii all cover a portion of the cost of hospice services, and community donations assist in making up the shortfall between insurance payments and the cost per patient/per day. But we provide hospice care to all those who are eligible regardless of whether they have insurance coverage or the ability to pay. Hospice Maui is celebrating its 29th anniversary of service to the Maui community on Tuesday, November 16, the same day as our fundraising event, “Dine Out for Hospice Maui.”
Serving Maui since 1981, Hospice Maui is committed to providing quality, compassionate
care to help ease the physical, emotional and spiritual pain associated with illness. They
provide services that allow patients to live each day to the fullest, with meaning and
purpose, in accordance with their deeply held values and beliefs. The Hospice Maui team
is comprised of nurses, social workers, spiritual counselors, home health aides, volunteers
and Hospice’s Medical Director who works directly with the patient’s primary care
physicians, the patient, and family itself.
