Sumptuous wines of the world and art come together this Friday in one fabulous fundraiser for Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center at the 4th annual Wailea Food and Wine Celebrationunder this year’s theme Li’ula i Wailea “twilight at Wailea”. This wine event is really like no other on Maui, a gathering of art appreciators and wine appreciators alike. This friday step out on the lawns at Hotel Wailea and enjoy fine wines of the world along with some of the cuisine our top Maui chefs have to offer. The evening also features live entertainment and an auction of coveted art and wine travel packages.
The chefs that get involved are inspired to create pairings that will be a treat for attendees. There is a nice range of different dishes to keep you tasting. Seafood dishes like south of the border Hamachi from Cuatro, and curried lobster bisque or Dan Fisk’s “A Private Maui Chef” line caught Haiku smoked Marlin will be sought after. The chef’s at Three’s Bar and Grill are always thinking outside of the box, they will present lamb and foie gras roulade with shitake, prosciutto and arugula, and crispy goat cheese polenta cake with blackberry and raspberry compote.
The team at Maui Culinary Academy will have shichimi spiced shrimp with avocado and a tomato gazpacho, and a grilled asparagus crostini. Cafe O’ Lei is going hearty, whole roasted pig with chinese sweet buns. Pasta from Capische is an art form itself – kabocha pumpkin gnocchi with lavender alfredo. Spago’s pan asian influence will serve a Korean kalbi with pineapple kim chee. For dessert, fresh homemade gelato from Zia Maria.
This amazing menu is going to be even more memorable with the 200 wines that will be here to taste. Chambers and Chambers Wine Merchants sponsors this event and has dedicated themselves to upping the wine ante year after year. Jim Powlan, from Chambers and Chambers, who organizes the event, says, “I wanted to find a way to use the wineries to give back to the community. This year we have 29 winemakers and representatives from wineries, that is up from 6 last year.”
While they will have fine wines from all over the world, Australia, Germany, Italy, Japan, Portugal, Spain, Oregon, and Washington, the longest list of wines is from California. You will have the rare opportunity to meet and mingle with some of the fascinating winemakers in the industry. Rob Sinskey has a certified biodynamic Napa winery and creates organic wines, he says, “It doesn’t make sense to create a toxic environment for something we are all going to enjoy.” John and Karen Bergstrom will be here from their Oregon family owned winery, Bergstrom Wines. Ronald Du Preez, moved from South Africa to take an internship at Jordan Winery in 2000 and was promoted to assistant winemaker just three years later, and will be on hand. Jordan winery was certified as a green business in 1999 and practices sustainable agriculture. With every bottle of wine there is an interesting story about how that wine got to the glass, and you can explore that among these individuals in the industry. Also attending, Larry Turley, Turley Wine Cellar, Dan Morgan Lee, Morgan Winery, Ray and Diana Goff, Amavi/Pepperbridge Winery, Michael Dashe, Dashe Cellars, Johannes Selbach, Selbach Wines, and Suzanne Chambers, Chambers and Chambers Wine Merchants.
Perhaps one of the most exciting elements to this event is the auction, where, after sipping on these 200 wines, you can generously bid (supporting the arts on maui) on amazing works of art from Douglas Chun, Dick Nelson, Pam Andelin, and Timothy Cummings. Also up for bid, a remarkable trip to wine country with a stay at the Olive House at the Turley Wine Cellars property, nestled amont the 100 year old olive grove in St. Helena, California. Three exclusive VIP tasting experiences are packaged in including Swanson Vineyards, Turley Wine Cellars, and the ZD Wines Abacus tour.
When Chambers and Chambers designated the Hui No’eau as the beneficiary of the event, they are touching the lives and artistic endeavors of more than 10,000 people on Maui. The Hui serves the Maui Community with educational programs, running art classes and camps at their Baldwin Avenue location, and also with outreach in the community. With our own public education institutions struggling to provide quality art education, the Hui fulfills some of that need in art education initiatives. Chambers and Chambers set the event so that 100% of proceeds after cost goes to the Hui. Last year the event raised $10,000 and their goal this year is to increase that by $5000.
