Location: The Triangle, this is a term of endearment, and I think its short for a euphemism for Barmuda Triangle, because you may feel as though you were dropped into this mysterious zone after a few rounds in this area that is tightly packed with fun drinking and eating establishments. (AKA Kihei Kalama Village).
Decor: its all tiki all the time. elegantly outfitted like the Polynesian outpost it is, with bamboo and grass shack chic detail. The out door deck has painted wooden picnic tables and vines growing all around. Expect crazy tiki glass ware, traditional martini glasses during the day, plastic at night. Paper plates and rattan baskets serve as dinner ware.
Grog Log: American pop culture has been intoxicated by the lore of tiki drinks aka poloynesian cocktail culture since the 30’s, when Louisiana native Ernest Ramond Beaumont-Gantt opened a tiny Hollywood bar, invented the zombie and changed his name to Don the Beachcomber. While some customers remarked it made them feel like the living dead, the back of a 1941 Beachcomber menu calls the potent drink a “mender of broken dreams.” The bar was quick to gain popularity aand at the same time Trader Vic and his 20 polynesian themed restaurants and boozy drinks gained success. Now the Donn is dead and Don the Beachcomber is a copyrighted name, licensed only to the owners at Royal Lahaina, where you will find an active Don the Beachcomber restaurant in their Royal Kona location. At the South Shore Tiki Lounge the Zombie will take you on a trip to the Bermuda Triangle and back courtesy of Renie Hameyalian and Mikhail Tassi and the staff who developed and tested the drinks and the new drink menu. Also on the new drink menu, the pin up potion, a deep blood red cocktail that is a new fav of mine. Need refreshment minus the intoxication? Their new spritzers are just the thing served in a champagne flute.
Entertainment: There is live entertainment everyday at the Tiki Lounge, Sebrina Barron, Kanoa, Viva La Rumba, Randall Rospond, Tom Conway, and Erin Smith headline regularyly. At night expect to wear your dancin’ shoes and shake your booty, cuz every night but Sunday features DJs and dance music.
Grinds: The Best of Maui award winning pizza is at the top of my list, take note: the pineapple pizza pairs with everything on the cocktail menu and the pineapple is fresh cut not canned, ever. Also stellar, calamari and ceviche. Sandwiches like fresh fish, chicken breast and burgers are perfect for a big appetite with fries and salad. Check out their full menu here.
