Your Guide to the Brews and Food at Maui Brew Fest

So Many Beers So Little Time

Beer is a gift from the ancient monks and alchemists of Mesopotamia. But it’s also a gift that keeps on giving: modern brewing marvels have given us more types of craft brews to keep up with the complexities of our contemporary palates.
Here on Maui, Maui Brewing Company’s locally crafted brews have fed the progress and kept craft culture at the forefront of local beer consumption. The Maui Brewers Festival, a benefit at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, is another key to our beer appreciation. This year, the festival will offer 70 beers from 29 breweries. The food community has rallied around the festival, and there will be cuisine from 24 of our island’s best restaurants, food trucks and caterers.

Of course, the hardest part about the Maui Brewers Festival is figuring out which beers to taste. To help you, we created this handy brew guide. While we don’t have the space to get into the brewing subtleties of each beer–what makes an IPA versus lager; why maibocks are a spring beer; what is a summer ale; what differentiates American styles from European styles–but you can always download the BJCP app (iphone & android), which breaks down technicalities for more than 28 different styles of beer. But what we can do is list the festival’s brews and a bit about the breweries.

Feel free to tear this out and keep in your pocket. And for any social beer blabbers, remember to use the #MauiBrewFest hashtag with your posts. As always, enjoy yourself, but please do so responsibly:

For the ultimate beer geek, download the Untappd app (iphone & android) and become part of the craft drinking community there, with tasting points and beer finding guides.
