For the final 2010 installment of Wailuku First Friday, event coordinators promise a block party glittering with all the magic of the holiday season. Maui OnStage’s A Christmas Carol embarks on its second of three weekends at the historic Iao Theater (7:30pm; see page 17 for more). Further in the way of entertainment, the prodigious rockers of the one and only Vince Esquire Band headline at the Maui Thing stage. Speaking of prodigious, the winners of the Keiki Na Mele competition will be presented with wreaths by Na Hanona Kulike ‘o Pi‘ilani at Native Intelligence (the store also will debut its new makahiki line in a Christmas lu‘au-themed night), and Lily and Toby from the Arts Education for Children Group will perform at the Wailuku Coffee Company (4:30-6:30pm). Also, check out mainstay crooners Gene and Shea Argel outside Cafe O‘Lei (additionally, the restaurant hosts a special wine dinner; call 986-0044 for reservations), plus Robbie Ray’s Cocoland Jazz show at the Wailuku Banyan Tree Park just across the way. The town’s festivities continue to grow, so be sure to mosey around the corner to Swan Interiors on Vineyard Street for even more live entertainment (5-8pm). Last month, I touted how some hard workers had transformed a sandy lot into a sodded oasis, but that fine space—home of the Maui Recycling Group’s popular beer garden—now also boasts a stunning mural. Of similar vibrant illustration is UH Professor Emeritus Victor Pelegrino’s latest keiki book Uncle Kawaiola’s Dream—he’ll be at Native Intelligence signing copies—and Maui Thing will sell Baldwin High School’s fundraiser cookbooks for the school’s Project GRAD (“graduation really achieves dreams”). And if you want to wield a little wordsmithery of your own, vie for the $20 prize at Gallerie Ha’s monthly poetry slam, which this month features guest emcee Monte Perez. 249-9710, 878-1888, 1stfridaywailuku@gmail.com
