Here’s something you don’t see every day–a play about Maui’s fight over genetically modified organisms (GMOs). Titled Star Crossed on Maui, the play will open (and close) Monday, May 11 at the Iao Theater in Wailuku as part of their ONO (One Night Only) monthly series.
Don’t expect a subtle, nuanced look at the GMO controversy. Written by Amorah St. John–a supporter of the anti-GMO SHAKA Movement–the play “is the story of one woman’s transformation from a conservative, GMO advocate to a free spirited, conscious environmentalist,” according to the email SHAKA sent out on May 6 to promote the play.
“Shaka supporter, Amorah St. John, wrote the script for a proposed web series that shines a new light on the GMO controversy and the transforming power of love,” states the Shaka email. “There will be a staged reading of the pilot show and episode two as part of the Iao Theater’s monthly ONO (One Night Only) presentations. Local actors include the fabulous Kathy Collins as Glory Halleluiah, the Iao’s own Steven Dascoulias as Baba Bobby-Ji, Eric Molina as Kekoa and Ellie Rae as Lily. Maui’s Queen of Swing, Louise Lambert, provides the music.”
Admission is free, and the play starts at 6:30pm. Once again, the play takes place on Monday, May 11.
