Honolulu’s Kumu Kahua Theatre presents Scot Izuka’s Shoyu on Rice this Friday and Saturday (Apr. 24 & 25) at The Maui Arts and Cultural Center. Set in the mid 1980s, the play takes place at an all-boys school and unravels the dynamic between Hawaii’s Pidgin English and an outsider’s adjustment period. Will the Kansas native learn to navigate the cultural differences between her and her students as well as her future husband’s Japanese-American family? $28. 7:30pm. The Maui Arts and Cultural Center, McCoy Studio Theater (One Cameron Way, Kahului); 808-242-7469, Mauiarts.org
