JAZZ AND BLUES FEST – Jazz it up around Maui this weekend at the Jazz & Blues Fest presented by the Maui Invitational Music Festival. The four-day lineup includes global talents along with some of our favorite Maui musicians. The fest kicks off tonight with Hawaii Island blues artist Colin John playing at the Royal Lahaina Resort at 5:30pm. John has performed around the world and is renowned for his acoustic, resonator and electric guitar skills. The Shiro Mori Trio (with special guest Henry Allen) will also play on Thursday at Whaler’s Village from 6:30-9pm. Shiro Mori is a jazz guitarist originally from Japan and Henry Allen is a master of Hawaiian steel guitar. Free. 5:30-9pm. SAVOR THE SUNSET – Here’s an easy way to be philanthropic while dancing the night away on the beach: come to Rotary Club of Lahaina’s Savor the Sunset event at the Royal Lahaina. Popular local group JD on the Rocks Band play, and there will also be free wine tasting and gourmet pupus. This will be Rotary Club of Lahaina’s third annual fundraiser for the Lahaina Public Library’s interior facelift and modernization. Rotary hopes to raise enough money to finish the interior facelift and move on to the next project, which is re-landscaping the library’s front lawn. $50 in advance/$60 at the door/$450 table for 10. PADDLE FOR FOOD – Grab that canned food out of your pantry that you haven’t touched since the last tsunami warning and head over to the Maui Canoe Club. In exchange for one or more non-perishable food items, you can jump into one of the club’s outrigger canoes and paddle with them for half an hour. All food donations will go to the Maui Food Bank. FIVE-COURSE RUM DINNER – If you often find yourself asking “Why is all the rum gone”? then you A) might be Captain Jack Sparrow, and B) need to get yourself over to the Grand Wailea this Friday. PAIA FOURTH FRIDAY – Like the summer of 1967, Paia’s “Summer of Love” Fourth Friday Town Party will have plenty of hippies, live music, art and dancing. They’ll have their first town-sponsored fashion show at Johnny B’s, featuring fashions from Nuage Bleu, Biasa Rose and Imrie and hairstyles by Vanity Salon. The show starts at 7:30pm with DJ Cosmic from PYCC (Paia Youth & Cultural Center) laying down beats. Matt Lane & Co. will take over the turntables for dancing from 8-9pm. Tropical bass-heavy dance music group Sandwich Island Bass (Rudy Castorina, Joti Mangat and Darren Quinsaat) is hosting a release party for their EP, SIB VOL 1, in Indigo’s parking lot and will give out t-shirts and music all night. THE GROUCH & ELIGH SHOW – The Grouch and Eligh, members of California’s underground hip hop group Living Legends, are playing a show at Casanova this Saturday. KULA FOOD SLAM – Upcountry’s favorite general store is hosting a little get-together with ono grinds and live music. NSEW FESTIVAL – Pui Ming’s main goal is to connect and communicate with listeners through her music. She does this in her recordings as well as her live performances, which have been described as “riveting,” “mind altering” and “an inspiring journey for body, spirit and mind.” She plays with contemporary Chinese music, improvised solo piano and vocals. Since her first recording in 1991, Pui Ming has performed at folk, jazz and new music festivals throughout Canada, the U.S., Europe and in China. KI HO‘ALU GUITAR FESTIVAL – Nothing says “summer in paradise” like a day of sun, Hawaiian music all-stars and local food on a grassy lawn. Welcome to the Ki Ho’alu Guitar Festival at the MACC, where some of Hawaii’s best slack-key guitarists are set to perform. The lineup includes Brother Noland, Dennis Kamakahi, George Kahumoku, Nathan Aweau, Maunalua featuring Bobby Moderow, Stephen Inglis, Kawika Kahiapo, George Kuo, Hi‘ikua featuring Kamuela Kimokeo, Paul Tokogoka, LT Smooth, Keale, Ola Hou featuring Kevin & Ikaika Brown and Makana. ROLLER DERBY – The Maui Roller Girls (MRG) are giving us a “Truly Outrageous” scrimmage in which Jem & the Holograms face off with The Misfits. HAWAII ANIMAL RESCUE COMMUNITY DAY – Help out man’s (and woman’s) best friend while grocery shopping this Wednesday at Whole Foods. Five percent of the day’s sales will benefit Hawaii Animal Rescue Foundation (HARF), a no-kill shelter for abandoned, stray and neglected dogs. They provide several animal-welfare services including pet adoptions, re-homing programs and foster care programs for animals with special needs. They’re a non-profit run by animal-loving volunteers and they need your support to keep saving our furry friends!
