NNENNA FREELON – The Maui Arts and Cultural Center is welcoming Jazz singer, composer, arranger and education advocate Nnenna Freelon this Thursday. The five-time Grammy nominated vocalist has shared the stage with Anita Baker, Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin. But that’s apparently not enough for her: Freelon’s passion for music and education has also won her accolades like the YWCA of North Carolina’s 2011 inaugural Legend Award for outstanding artistry and dedication to education and the 2010 Woman of Substance Award by Bennett College for Women. KIHEI FOURTH FRIDAY – Kihei Fourth Friday invites you to dress up (in costume) for an evening of Halloween festivities. KA LIMA O MAUI JOB FAIR – Ka Lima O Maui commemorates National Disability Employment Awareness Month with their second annual job fair for persons with disabilities. This Friday, the organization invites the public to explore employment resources and learn about disability work issues. They chose this year’s theme, “Because We Are Equal to the Task,” in hopes of getting people to realize that regardless of any disability, everyone deserve the same training, education and chance to excel in the workplace. ALLEN TOUSSAINT – For the first time on Maui, Charley’s Restaurant and Saloon welcomes Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Songwriters Hall of Fame and Blues Hall of Fame member Allen Toussaint. Usually accompanied by a piano, Toussaint’s career spans more than 50 years. His songs include “Working in the Coalmine,” “Ruler of My Heart” and “Fortune Teller,” which have been covered by many, including the Rolling Stones and Otis Redding.
