OBON IN WAILUKU – It’s Wailuku’s turn to observe the summer Obon Festival, beginning with the Wailuku Jodo Mission tonight and the Shingon Mission on Saturday. Dance the bon odori to welcome the spirits of the dead. Of course, once those spirits are welcomed, feel free to gorge on some of Maui’s best chow fun. HAPA – It’s been 20 years since they released their first album, but HAPA is still going strong. The Hawaiian music duo, Barry Flanagan and Ron Kuala’au, are internationally renowned for their take on contemporary Hawaiian music. Their sound blends traditional Hawaiian mele, oli and chanting with American acoustic/folk sounds and Hawaiian slack-key guitar. Last year, the group appeared on an episode of Hawaii 5-0 and played Flanagan’s instrumental composition “Olinda Road.”In the same year, they were also asked to perform in the Adam Sandler romantic comedy Just Go With It. MAKAWAO TOWN PARTY – There will be dancing in the streets of Makawao this Friday night. Specifically, Baldwin Avenue. That’s because Makawao’s Third Friday Town Party will close off Baldwin from Brewer Street to Makawao Avenue to make way for the festivities. Live music offerings will include The Haiku Hillbillys and Elaine Ryan. SAVE MAKENA SKIM CONTEST – Skimboard masters have developed an incredible skill of sailing across slick wet sand in a spectacular motion that could entail a lot of twirling and flipping into the ankle breaks. Best of all, it’s all right there in front spectators. This Saturday, the Save Makena Skimboard contest goes head over heels at the perfect location: Makena State Park. FOUR FATHERS, FOUR SONS – When Hawaiian slack-key masters compete, you win! This Saturday, talented father and son duos will engage in a little good-natured competition onstage at the MACC in celebration of Father’s Day. The Hawaiian music duos will be Dennis & David Kamakahi, Richard & Kai Ho‘opi‘i, Kevin & Ikaika Brown and George & Keoki Kahumoku. Musical stylings will include Hawaiian slack-key guitar, ukulele and leo ki‘e ki‘e (falsetto). First, each pair will perform together, and then the four fathers will go head-to-head with their sons. BLUE LAGOON AIRS – Maui goes Hollywood (or network television, at least), this Saturday when Lifetime Network airs Blue Lagoon: The Awakening, a remake of the 1980 movie (referred to in a County of Maui press release as a “classic,” amazingly enough). A lot of the movie was filmed at various scenic locations on Maui, including Paia, Makena and Twin Falls. More than 30 island residents were employed as crew members during filming. For those who missed the original, the movie is about two young hotties (played by Australians Brenton Thwaites and Indiana Evans) who get stranded on a tropical island, grow up together and fall in love. BOWLING FOR THE KIDS – Hit the bowling alley this Saturday for Big Brothers Big Sisters’ 25th annual Bowl For Kids’ Sake fundraiser. This year’s theme is “Hollywood Silver Screen,” and participants will get star-studded treatment with a lunch prepared by Chef Conrad Aquino from the Sheraton Maui Resort, two games of bowling, an event T-shirt, goodie bag and chances to win prizes. If the idea of used bowling shoes makes you cringe, you can participate as an event sponsor or volunteer. Event proceeds will support Big Brothers Big Sisters’ mentoring programs in which children facing adversity are matched with screened volunteer mentors. NA KAMEHAMEHA PARADE & HO‘OLAULE‘A – Celebrate Hawaii’s ali’i and cultural traditions with a pā‘ū parade and ho’olaule’a on Front Street this Saturday. The pā‘ū parade will showcase Hawaiian equestrian styling and honors the Kamehameha lineage. The ho’olaule’a will feature cultural tours and exhibits of traditional voyaging canoes and Moku’ula, an ancient political and spiritual center that has remained undisturbed for a century and contains royal residences and a mausoleum. There will be live music, hula and polynesian dance. Browse Maui-made crafts and food booths throughout the day. Kids can enjoy Makahiki games with Kula Kaiapuni O Maui ma Nahi’ena’ena (Hawaiian immersion school).
