While it’s always fun to watch tourists jump during the regularly scheduled monthly doomsday siren tests, it’s quite another experience for locals to be going through their usual day and suddenly hear the alarm.
As part of the Statewide Siren Modernization Project, officials will be conducting siren tests this week at a nine locations around the island. “Residents nearby may hear the siren sound six to eight times for 30-second to one-minute intervals during the identified timeframe,” states a May 15 news release from the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency. “Testing will include short blasts known as “burps.” During the tests, emergency management officials and technicians will check that installation work on these sirens has been completed properly.”
So to prevent needless terror, here’s the siren testing schedule (such as it is, given the rather large time ranges):
