The annual Kahului Hongwanji Mission’s Obon Festival will take place this Friday, July 15. In Japanese culture, the obon festival is a time to honor ancestors and loved ones who have passed away; a Buddhist-Confucian custom that is now a family holiday. The obon service at the Kahului Hongwanji Mission will feature bon-odori dancing, taiko drumming, music and food like chow fun, rolled sushi, teriyaki beef plates, nishime, salads and more. Free. 7:30pm. Kahului Hongwanji Preschool, (291 S. Pu`unene Ave., Kahului); 808-877-7998; Kahuluihongwanjipreschool.com
